Making Disability Rights Real

– invitation to hui and online feedback

Next year, the United Nations will review New Zealand’s implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The UNCRPD is a human rights document that outlines how governments can ensure that disabled people’s rights are being realised and barriers decreased. If you would like to find out more about the UNCRPD please click this link

The Covention in Brief

The UNCRPD requires countries to designate an independent mechanism to protect, promote and monitor its implementation. In New Zealand, the Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) is made up of the Office of the Ombudsman, the Human Rights Commission and the Disabled People’s Organisations’ Coalition.

Later this year, the IMM will make a report to the New Zealand Parliament and next year to the United Nations called Making Disability Rights Real. We want to make sure that we tell the United Nations about the experience of disabled people in New Zealand. Including barriers to participation and opportunities for change.

To do this, there are several hui around the country, to find out about key issues facing disabled New Zealanders. Please view our google calendar to see when and where these workshops are happening!
